"If Syrsky won't eat him". Shmyhal heads the Defense Ministry – what kind of minister he will be
Updated July 17. Denys Shmyhal became the new Minister of Defense of Ukraine. He replaced Rustem Umerov in this position, as 267 MPs voted in favor of him.
Shmyhal's appointment will be one of the key ones in the new government. Although until recently it seemed that his fate was uncertain. Some of the interlocutors confidently said LIGA.net that he would become the new Minister of Defense. Others were equally confident that he would not become the Minister of Defense.

At the moment, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi has all the power, and a counterweight is needed, adds Solomiya Bobrovska, a representative of the Verkhovna Rada Defense Committee. The complicated relationship between the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defense is legendary, confirms LIGA.net Deputy Minister of Defense (2021-2023) Hanna Malyar: "As a joke, sometimes we thought that something was done there".
LIGA.net talked to two dozen former and current Defense Ministry employees, Umerov's deputies, former heads of the department, representatives of the Security and Defense Forces, and officers of the Armed Forces and the General Staff. Most say that this personnel change is for the better. Although they give different reasons.
