Six months without gas transit through Ukraine: myths debunked, Russia loses billions
Six months ago, the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine stopped, and despite lobbyists' predictions that transit would continue, the worst-case scenarios did not materialize
Sergiy Makogon
General Director of the Gas Transport System Operator of Ukraine in 2019-2022
Let's analyze what we were promised and what we actually have:
1 Myth: Russia will destroy our gas transportation system. The Russians have been attacking our underground gas storage facilities (UGS) and production facilities since the transit was in progress. Stopping transit did not intensify the attacks – the GTS is working steadily.
2 Myth: Without transit, there will not be enough pressure in the GTS, and cities will be left without gas. I have explained a thousand times: the pressure in our GTS is created by our own compressors. Transit has been going on in isolation to the EU for years. The result? Gas supply in Ukraine is uninterrupted.
