Polish politician, journalist, and political scientist.
In the second half of the 1980s, he worked as a war correspondent in Afghanistan and Angola; he is a winner of the World Press Photo Award in the photojournalism category. He was a Senator of the 6th convocation (2005–2007), a member of the Sejm of the 6th and 7th convocations (2007–2015), and a Member of the European Parliament of the 9th convocation (2019–2023).
In 1992, he served as Deputy Minister of National Defense, and from 1998 to 2001, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. From 2005 to 2007, he served as Minister of National Defense in the governments of Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz and Jarosław Kaczyński. From 2007 to 2014, and since 2023, he has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs in three governments under Donald Tusk. He was Speaker of the 7th Sejm (2014–2015), and Deputy Prime Minister (since 2025).
Together with Carl Bildt, he initiated the EU's Eastern Partnership program, launched in 2009.
In 2014, during the Euromaidan protests, he headed the European Union diplomatic mission in Kyiv. From 2010 to 2016, he served as Vice Chairman of the Civic Platform.
